The man pictured above is a lunatic

The sweaty, sticky, third quarter of 2018 has now passed. The days are getting shorter, and I am reflecting on my summer in film. My film consumption increased by 36%, somehow. Maybe it’s because it was too hot to do anything else? I finished the filmographies of James Cameron and Sofia Coppola, which felt like an accomplishment. This quarter’s stats are below, and my second and first quarter reports are here and here. I am still yet to watch the Maze Runner trilogy. My letterboxd account is here.

STATS:

  • 68 movies
    *23 seen in theaters
*44 movies from the 2010s, 8 from the 2000s, 7 from the 1990s, 5 from the 1980s, 2 from the 1970s, and 2 from the 1950s (Rebel Without a Cause & Some Like It Hot, both homoerotic delights)
    *30 starring women
*4 for Hawke Cast (Regression, Getaway, Juliet, Naked, & Blaze)
*16 directed by women (The Virgin Suicides, Leave No Trace, The Tale, Somewhere, Wanda, Rambling Rose, The Spy Who Dumped Me, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, Strange Days. Robin: Come Inside My Mind, Smithereens, Summer 1993, The Land of Steady Habits, Yentl, Something’s Gotta Give, Blockers)
*5 with LGBT leads and storylines (Hearts Beat Loud, Duck Butter, Interview with the Vampire, Brokeback Mountain, Blockers)
*6 Mission: Impossible films in one month (Mission: Impossible, Mission: Impossible 2, Mission: Impossible III, Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol, Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation, Mission: Impossible — Fallout)
*2 Dragon Ball Z films (Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods & Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’)
*Best movies I watched July-September: Tampopo, Leave No Trace, The Tale, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, Mission: Impossible — Fallout, Eighth Grade, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Rebel Without a Cause, Blindspotting, Shin Godzilla, Lady Macbeth, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Support the Girls, Brokeback Mountain, Yentl

I was pretty happy overall with the movies I watched this quarter. Moviepass began its slow death in late July, and I will continue to milk it for all its worth until it either implodes or steals my bank account. I made a much better effort to watch films directed by women, and it is really paying off. I can’t wait for the Nancy Meyers miniseries on Blank Check. I see no reason to stop my endeavor now. Plus, all the awards movies are going to be popping up from now until January. I’m most looking forward to Suspiria, The Favourite, and Can You Ever Forgive Me? Also, I’m seeing A Star is Born this Friday sooooo….

That’s all! Thanks for reading, and I’ll see you in January for my full year in review.
