All the Movies I Watched in 2022

Cheerful!

Welcome back to my annual exorcism! I watched 414 movies this year, just about the same as 2021. Again, this seems very high, but I do just get a lot of screeners now and a lot of my social life revolves around movies. So it’s fine. I will say, I was so busy in November that I only watched new releases, and while I did watch good stuff that was mostly an awful, eroding experience. This is why all critics are insane. I broke the spell with Bulworth and it felt like the best movie ever. I really can’t do that again. I need the flavor! The goal for 2023 is to just keep doing what I’m doing: chipping away at various directors, homing in on those I can finish off. I’ll be focusing on James Gray and Danny Boyle first, but I’m also planning to finally finish my Varda collection. But of course, who knows what will actually happen. They’re threatening to put out a Mario movie and that could derail my entire life.

Last year’s list is here, as usual.

2022 Top Ten

My top ten is on Hassle, but I will list it again here for completion’s sake.

2. The Fabelmans dir. Steven Spielberg
1. TÁR dir. Todd Field

The Second Annual ‘Memoria’ Award for ‘Most Memoria’

This was mostly a joke but I think it has to go to Memoria again? I didn’t see anything else particularly Memoria-y this year. I guess TÁR kind of… I’ll come back to this.

18. Beavis and Butt-head Do the Universe
17. Benediction
16. Saint Omer

The Conformist
The Clock (1945)
Nashville
Where is the Friend’s House?
Ran
Wings of Desire

Flop

Superheroes

Holy shit! They HAVE to stop doing this!!!! The only one that’s actually a movie is The Batman, and who cares! I thought we hit the bottom of the barrel last year, but nope! There is always further to fall. All I want is for these things to stop making money. Is an Ant-Man movie going to make money in February? Where does this end? Thank god Dwayne beefed it so hard that the DCEU has totally collapsed, beyond a couple lame duck movies next year. And they still haven’t canceled The Flash???

The Batman
Morbius
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Thor: Love and Thunder
X-Men: Apocalypse
Black Adam
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Documentaries

As always I could stand to watch more docs and as always I fail to. But the ones I did watch were great! Except Claydream, that guy is crazy.

Fire of Love
We Met in Virtual Reality
Claydream
This Ain’t Normal
Crestone
All the Beauty and the Bloodshed

I mean, I had to. And it rocks! You’re lulled into a sleepy sense of boredom then she’ll hit you with the saddest line you’ve ever heard. And what an ugly son!

Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles

Franchises

James Bond

My 2022 project for the first couple months ended up being pretty fun despite half of the movies being boring or terrible. It is so funny they blew him the fuck up in the last one. Wonder what the plan is for the next guy. I think Brosnan will always be my guy but Craig really did something. He is so happy to be free, and I’m happy for him!

Planet of the Apes

It is so crazy there are five of these and everyone in the late 60s/early 70s went nuts for them! And the recent ones were good too! I’ll keep watching them if they keep making them! Apes together strong!

White Mike Summer

This was a summer project where I caught up on the filmographies of Mike Nichols, Mike Leigh, Mike White, and also one thing by Mike Judge. It was a great idea, no regrets, even when I had to watch some of the worst shit Nichols ever crapped out. I should have rewatched Angels in America to counteract it. Mr. Turner!

“They’re not gonna graduate” — Lena Dunham in My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea

In conclusion?

So, I didn’t beat last year’s number for the first time since like 2015. Don’t know if that’ll be a trend but it’ll be interesting to chart! I feel like it’ll be lower since Friday the 13th is one of the last franchises I’d consider catching up on. The year will start promisingly with M3GAN (hopefully) and another Sundance festival. We’ll go from there. My Hassle writing is here. Letterboxd here. Have a great new year!
